Question 5: If you suddenly turn on your shower water at full speed, why is the shower curtain pushed inward?

ANSWER

When the shower is suddenly turned on, water flows down with high speed. It also pushes down the nearby column of air with itself. As a result the velocity of the air molecules also increases. According to Bernoulli’s effect, the pressure drops in this region. However, the air molecules on the other side of the curtain are moving slower. The pressure is high there, according to Bernoulli’s principle. The result is the curtain is pushed inward, toward the low pressure region.
(Can you derive a mathematical equation for it as you did in problems 3, 4)?
