Question 13: What is meant by braking radiation?

ANSWER

Consider an X-rays tube. Let a fast moving electron moving towards the target. This electron interacts with the orbital electrons and nucleus of the target atom in accordance with Coulomb Law. Nucleus has more concentrated charge. Its interaction with nucleus is stronger. The force due to the nucleus of the target atom makes the electron to change its path. In this way, the electron undergoes a change in the velocity and becomes an accelerated charge. This slowed down electron then emits X-rays radiation with a continuous spectrum on the screen.

This sort of radiations produced by a beam of decelerated charged particle (electron) is called braking radiations.
