Question 3: Define the following;

Velocity, uniform velocity, variable velocity, average velocity, instantaneous velocity.

ANSWER

Velocity: Velocity is defined as the distance covered in one second in a particular direction.

Since distance in a particular direction is displacement, velocity is alternatively defined as, the rate of change of displacement. Obviously, velocity is a vector quantity.

Time rate, rate of change or change in unit time or one second are similar terms mean any changes carried out in one second.

Mathematically,

ā€˜dā€™ being the magnitude of the displacement.

Unit of velocity is ms-1 and its dimensions are [LT-1].

Uniform Velocity: If a body covers equal displacements in equal intervals of time, it is said to be moving with uniform velocity.

Variable velocity: If in equal intervals of time a body covers unequal displacements, it is said to have variable velocity.

Average Velocity: Average velocity is total displacement divided by total time taken.

Mathematically,

Instantaneous Velocity

It is the velocity of a body at a particular instant of time.

When time intervals become extremely small, denoted by āˆ†t, the displacement intervals also become small, say āˆ†V, the instantaneous velocity is then;
