Question 11: What are laser knives?

ANSWER

Laser beam is coherent and directed in one direction in parallel. As such high energy density (concentrated energy) is the characteristic of lasers. When we focus such a high energy density beam of laser on one point (for example, using a lens), it can cut a number of material and therefore, called laser knives. This falling of laser beam on small areas makes fine cuts with minimum cut-width on a number of materials.

Laser knives are widely used in human surgery (as well as veterinary surgeries). In humans it is used for the surgery of soft tissues (like kidney), eyes (for the treatment of short and far-sightedness), skin, spine and tumors. This bloodlessly surgery (sometimes called radio surgery)  is now becoming popular in medical sciences.

Apart from that, laser knives can also be used for cutting hard materials in industry.
