Problem 5: A tension of 400 N causes a 300 g wire of length 1.6 m to vibrate with a frequency of 40 Hz. What is the wavelength of the transverse waves?

Solution

Given

Tension in the wire, T = 400 N

Frequency of the wave, f = 40 Hz

Mass of the wire, m = 300 g = 0.3 kg

Required             Wavelength of the wave, λ.

Formula

Since, we do not know velocity of the wave, therefore, we first find it using formula,

Therefore, putting the values,

Now put this value in the formula for wavelength, λ.
