Question 14: Explain tracer technique in agriculture.
ANSWER
Tracer technique is useful in agriculture research as well. Suppose one wants to determine the best method of fertilizing a plant. S/he should know which method of giving fertilizer (urea, nitrate) is the best; spray on a group of plants, sprinkle on the second group of plants and mixing into the soil for a third group of plants.
A certain material in the fertilizer like nitrogen (in urea or nitrate) is tagged with one of its radioactive isotopes. It can be, then, investigated with a Geiger counter in which the fertilizer is well absorbed.
