Problem 3: Write the nuclear equations for beta decay of the following; (a) 82Pb210 (b) 83Bi210 (c) 90Th 210 (d) 93Np239

Solution

  • A neutron in the 82Pb210 converts to proton with the emission of -β particle and a gamma radiation (energy) and anti-neutrino.

    82Pb210 —–→ 83Bi210 + -1β0 + anti-neutrino + Q     

  • 83Bi210 —–→ 84Po210 + -1β0 + anti-neutrino + Q

    (Remember, 84Po210 then undergoes α decay to convert to stable 84Po206).

  • 90Th 234 —–→ 91Pa234 + -1β0 + anti-neutrino + Q
  • 93Np239 —–→ 94Pu239 + -1β0 + anti-neutrino + Q
